Rottweiler Puppies

RottweilerAs you have probably seen Rottweilers have had some pretty bad press, but with the right training they can make great family pets.
Rottweilers are classed as a giant breed as they grow between 23″ to 27″ (58 to 68cm) tall and can weigh between 90-120 pound (41 t0 54kg).
The coat only comes in one colour mainly black with tan markings. Their coat is easy to maintain only needing to be brushed twice a week to remove dead hair.

Rottweilers are not suited to apartment living due to them being such a large dog with lots of energy. They are best suited to a house with a large garden, bearing this in mind an adult dog will still need at least one long walk a day. Rottweilers are loyal, confident and protective and can be very head strong especially adolescent males. The ideal owner would be somebody who can be confident, firm but also patient.

More information on the Rottweiler

Despite the versatility of the Rottweiler and that fact that in recent times it has been used for many purposes, the breed is primarily known as one of the oldest herding dogs. Rottweilers were trained in both herding and extensively used for protection of stock animals. The Rottweiler is capable of working all kinds of livestock in varying conditions.

The breed history of the Rottweiler dates to the Romans when legions required the assistance of working dogs to herd the cattle which was used to feed the troops. One frequently travelled route took the army through Württemberg and to the small town of Rottweil. Principal ancestry of the earliest Rottweiler dogs during this time are believed to be Roman droving dogs which were dogs that the legion had acquired on its travels, plus large solidly-built dogs hailing from the Netherlands.

The Württemberg region would become an important cattle area and descendants of the Roman cattle dogs soon began to demonstrate their value and versatility. Rottweilers are also said to have been used in the Middle Ages by travelling butchers to guard money pouches tied around their necks. But as railroads became the defacto method for moving stock to market, the breed declined significantly.

However, in the years leading up to the first World War there was demand for police dogs which lead to renewed interest in the Rottweiler. Later, during the First and Second World Wars, Rottweilers served as messengers, ambulance dogs and guard dogs.

The first Rottweiler club was founded in Germany in 1914 and in the years that followed, several German Rottweiler Clubs amalgamated to form the Allgemeiner Deutscher Rottweiler Klub (General German Rottweiler Club) in 1921. The ADRK is nowadays recognised worldwide as the home club of the Rottweiler breed. In 1936, Rottweilers were first exhibited in Britain at Crufts and in 1966 a separate register was opened for the breed. By the mid 1990s, the popularity of the Rottweiler reached an all time high with it being the most registered dog. Bad publicity in recent years has seen a decline in numbers.
